August 10, 2008 - The Indigenous Mapping Network (IMN), an affiliate of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indian Development, is happy to announce the re-launch of its web site, instep with Saturday's "First International Day for Indigenous People".IMN 2.0 uses open source technologies as part of its
syndicated skeletal structure:

The organization's goal is to support a professional talking circle of
Native, Indigenous, First Nation and people working with Indigenous communities, who are interested in taking mapping and cartographic projects to the decision-making
table.
IMN focuses on non-western and western map making as it relates to Indigenous cultural heritage, land and human rights, environmental, conservation and preservation issues, historical cartography, technology (Geographic Information Systems, GPS, Remote Sensing), urban planning and education. Information is shared through submission by remote authors, YOU!, of stories, news, articles, faqs, links, images, video or audio files, and news feeds.
The site is open to tribal, government, corporate, nonprofit,
institutional, and individuals interested in Indigenous GIS community
building. IMN focuses on non-western and western map
making as it relates to Indigenous cultural heritage, land and human rights, environmental, conservation and preservation issues, historical cartography, technology (Geographic Information
Systems, GPS, Remote Sensing), urban planning and education.
Information is shared through submission by remote authors, YOU!, who share news stories, articles, faqs, links,
images, video or audio files, and news feeds.
In September's horizon, expect a forum focused on community building and a map gallery. A few more networking surprises will also be unleashed! Suggestions with smiles or freebies are always welcome.

IMN Web History:
Initially, our site was developed and launched in 2005 by honorary board member Zeb DeOs, GIS Coordinator for the Coquille Tribe. Since then, he had to step away to manage life's requirements. The site lay basically catatonic, in a Web-Zero state. Occasional scattered smoke signals twitched out to
the universe.
The site's redevelopment and maintenance is the joy of IMN board member Rosemarie McKeon. The vision and need was spoken into being by the IMN board, and their wise counsel, infinite patience and gentle requests: Joshua Arnold (Couer d' Alene), M.C. Baldwin and Darlene Jenkins (Navajo Nation), Edith "Wook" Powaukee (Nez Perce), Kelly Hetzler (San Carlos Apache), Celene Elm (Oneida Nation), Laura Harjo (Creek), Renee Pualani Louis (Indigenous Hawaiian), and Jonathon Freeman (Seventh Generation Fund).
The ported site benefits from Joomla! , an open source content management system, and the many random acts of algorithmic kindness from Bay area devheads and beyond. You know who you are... Let's give it up for all of you! We've only just begun...
