The U.S. Department Of Energy's Tribal Energy Program assembles a list of funding and training opportunities and emails the list almost on a monthly basis. The list can be obtained by signing up to their email list.

The most recent list arrived 2/13/09, from Lizana Pierce, the Project Manager of DOE's Tribal Energy Program. It includes thirty-seven funding notices! However, please check each one for eligibility as many may not be specific to tribes and not all relate to GIS, community planning, or technology endeavors. 1)  Efficiency and Renewables in Indian Country 
The U.S. Department of Energy requests proposals for Renewable Energy  and Energy Efficiency Deployment in Indian Country.  Through this  initiative, DOE seeks applications from Indian Tribes, Tribal Energy  Resource Development Organizations or Tribal Consortiums for  installation of efficiency improvements to Tribally-owned buildings,  construction and installation of renewables for power production, and  related projects.  Up to $6 million expected to be available, up to  12 awards anticipated.  Responses due 4/1/09.  For more info, contact  Pamela Brodie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 2)  Alternative Transportation on Public Lands
The U.S. Department of Transportation requests proposals for the Paul  S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks Program.  This program funds capital and  planning expenses for alternative transportation systems such as  buses, trams and bikes in federally-managed parks and public lands.  Projects may include, but are not limited to:  The  deployment/commercialization of innovative alternative transportation  vehicles, and replacement of buses with clean fuel vehicles.   $26.9 million expected to be available, up to 50 awards anticipated.  Responses due 2/27/09.  For more info, contact Bonnie Graves at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 3)  Advanced Biosynthetic Transportation Fuel Production
The California Energy Commission  requests proposals for Advanced  Biosynthetic Transportation Fuel Production for RD&D focused on the  production of  transportation fuels via direct biosynthetic routes.  $1.65 million expected to be available, up to 3 project anticipated.  Responses due 3/6/09.  For more info, contact Sandra Cushman at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 4)  Natural Gas Engine R&D
The California Energy Commission requests proposals for Advanced Heavy  Duty Natural Gas Engine Research & Development.  RD&D priority areas  include:  Improvement of the operating fuel efficiency of heavy-duty  natural gas engines; improvement of the power output of natural gas  engines; and lowering the incremental cost of CNG or LNG vehicles.  $2.7 million expected to be available, individual awards  NTE $1 million.  Responses due 2/24/09.  For more info, contact  Sandra Cushman at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 5)  Hydrogen Highway Infrastructure
The California Air Resources Board requests proposals for California  Hydrogen Highway Network Modular Fueling Stations, for teams to  design, secure permits, build, maintain and operate hydrogen refueling  stations to serve as part of California's Hydrogen Highway Network.  $7 million expected to be available.  This RFP was listed in  Issue 185 but has since been cancelled and rebid.  Final proposals  due 2/17/09.  For more info, go to:   http://hydrogenhighway.ca.gov/policy_funding/policy_funding.htm  Refer to Sol# 08-606.
 
6)  20% Wind by 2030
The U.S. Department of Energy requests proposals for 20% Wind by  2030: Overcoming the Challenges.  This initiative will support  projects focused on overcoming major challenges to achieving the 20%  goal.  Areas of interest include:  Supporting wind turbine research  and testing; market acceptance; environmental impact; transmission  analysis, planning and assessments; workforce development;  distributed wind technology.  $8 million expected to be available,  up to 30 awards anticipated.  Responses due 3/3/09.  For more info,  contact Pamela Brodie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 7)  PV Technology Pre-Incubator

9)  U.S. Army REMs

NGRC Tribal / BIA Training Schedule for Jan-June 2009

R. J. Kern and Karl Seitz, ESRI Authorized GIS Instructors with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), National Geospatial Resource Center (NGRC), have posted the GIS Training Schedule for January through June of 2009. The courses are free to employees of federally recognized tribes and to BIA employees.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Deployment in Indian Country (Funding opportunity announcement number DE-PS36-09GO99014) 


DOE's Tribal Energy Program is currently seeking applications for funding from federally recognized tribes, tribal consortia, Alaska Native villages or regional or village corporations, and Tribal Energy Resource Development Organizations. Eligible projects: (1) installation of efficiency improvements to existing tribally owned buildings - including energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy systems for building heating or cooling, (2) pre-construction activities for renewable energy projects, and (3) construction of renewable energy systems for power production. DOE's Tribal Energy Program is offering summer internships to Native American students who are interested in renewable energy and who are currently college upper-class men or graduate students. To be considered for the 2009 summer program applications must be received by February 20, 2009.

3) REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) - ACCELERATING DEPLOYMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN INDIAN COUNTRY IN THE CONTIGUOUS 48 STATES [Note: A similar request for information was issued last year to obtain information from Alaska Natives, Native villages, village corporations and Regional Corporations]

DOE's Tribal Energy Program has issued a request for information (RFI). Under this RFI, DOE is seeking information from tribes and other parties interested in the deployment of renewable energy in Indian Country in the contiguous 48 states. This information will be used by DOE for internal planning and decision making purposes relative to future activities of the Tribal Energy Program.

The purpose of this RFI is solely to obtain information that could help to determine (1) the barriers to renewable energy deployment in Indian Country, and (2) the most beneficial and efficient ways for DOE to help accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in Indian Country.
