[Anchorage] - The Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. (RurAL CAP) and the State of Alaska Division of Community & Regional Affairs (DCRA) are pleased to co-host the Leading Change 2008 Conference in Anchorage, Alaska on October 1-3, 2008 at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown Hotel. The Leading Change 2008 Conference convenes participants from Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Australia, and the Lower 48 to discuss and learn about indigenous and community planning to help chart the future of their communities. Keynote speakers include Johnpaul Jones, Founding Partner of Jones and Jones Architects and Landscape Architects in Seattle, Washington; Tom Kaulukukui, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Queen Liliuokalani Trust in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Loretta Bullard, President of Kawerak, Inc. in Nome, Alaska.
The conference will include a facilitated summit on tribal planning, a collaborative effort of the Leading Change 2008 Conference, the American Planning Association’s Indigenous Planning Division and National Congress of American Indians’ (NCAI) Policy Research Center. The summit, one in a series of regional summits being held across the United States, will be led by Dr. Ted Jojola, Chair of APA’s Indigenous Planning Division and faculty member for planning at Arizona State University and University of New Mexico. It will feature presentations and roundtable discussions on tribal community planning and improving planning effectiveness. The proceedings will be compiled into a public policy report on the status of tribal planning throughout the nation and will be used to inform public policy and legislative initiatives.
“Indigenous people globally have survived in harsh, challenging times and environments for thousands of years. This conference provides western planners an opportunity to learn about sustainable indigenous planning, and for indigenous planners to examine western planning tools that can further benefit our communities,” said David Hardenbergh, Executive Director of RurAL CAP.
The Leading Change 2008 Conference is co-hosted by RurAL CAP and DCRA in partnership with the American Planning Association’s Alaska and Hawaii Chapters and Indigenous Planning Division, U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, and National Congress of American Indians. Major sponsors are the Denali Commission and U.S. Department of Commerce-National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, with additional support from Group 70 International, HDR, Agnew::Beck Consulting LLC, Alaska Project Solutions, Inc., and Dowl Engineers.
RurAL CAP, a statewide, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been working to improve the quality of life for low-income Alaskans since 1965. RurAL CAP employs more than 700 people annually in 71 communities statewide with expenditures of over $20 million. It provides resources and services to enhance child and family development, improve housing, reduce energy costs, develop leadership, promote environmental conservation, prevent substance abuse, and foster independent living.
